The truck is now on the road in the region around the grocer’s logistics and administrative headquarters in Henstedt-Ulzburg in the north, making climate-friendly deliveries to markets in the region. Northern Germany is particularly well suited for the use of hydrogen trucks: there is more green hydrogen available and the transport routes for the environmentally friendly fuel are short.

We have already set new standards with the REWE Green Buildings, which consume up to 40 per cent less energy. Now we also need to make our logistics fit for a sustainable future. With the hydrogen truck, we are now taking the first step in the region.”

The Hyundai vehicle of the type “XCIENT Fuel Cell” has a range of around 400 kilometres. The hydrogen is stored in seven tanks, which can be fully refuelled in a range of eight to 20 minutes, depending on the temperature. Schmitz Cargobull has equipped the vehicle with a special superstructure with cooling and tail lift: in accordance with the everyday requirements and entirely in line with the needs of REWE.

Before the vehicle was handed over to the customer, it was put through its paces by DEKRA Automobil GmbH. The experts will also carry out a general inspection and safety test for the vehicle.
