District of Düren, 16.06.2023 | The H2 MOBILITY Deutschland hydrogen station at the Düren Shell filling station Im Großen Tal was put into normal operation today in the presence of District Administrator Wolfgang Spelthahn. This marks the end of the six-month optimisation operation, during which final background work is still being carried out.
At the H2 filling station, five hydrogen buses of the Rurtalbus are already refuelling at 350 bar and various passenger cars and light commercial vehicles at 700 bar, including five vehicles of the district of Düren. The hydrogen station in Düren is conveniently located on the A4 motorway and closes the supply gap between Cologne and Aachen.
Hydrogen is used to refuel electric vehicles with fuel cells. Their advantages: no noise, no pollutants, but the same use, speed and range as vehicles with petrol or diesel engines. Hydrogen cars have ranges of up to 700 kilometres and refuel in three to five minutes; buses, like conventional buses, refuel in about 15 minutes for ranges of around 300 kilometres.
“With the final completion of the H2 filling station, we are once again a big step closer to our goal of becoming a hydrogen model region. It is enormously important for us to show that it works: We will soon be producing green hydrogen ourselves and using it in the Düren district and beyond,” said District Administrator Wolfgang Spelthahn.
The hydrogen filling station network in Germany
Currently, fuel cell drivers can refuel cars, smaller commercial vehicles and e.g. refuse collectors at 700 bar at over 90 public hydrogen filling stations in Germany. At various stations, refuelling at 350 bar is also possible for buses and trucks.
H2 MOBILITY Germany continues to expand the hydrogen filling station infrastructure in focus regions and along the TEN-T corridors in line with demand. In addition, existing 700 bar hydrogen refuelling stations will be expanded in the short term to include a 350 bar service.
